Broadband comes to mobiles

THE broadband internet services you enjoy at home will be coming to your mobile phone next year.

Telco 3 mobile has teamed with internet heavyweights like Skype and Google to allow its customers to make free international phone calls over the internet, watch their home TV, access their home computer and surf the web at high speeds with no constraints.

The service will be pre-loaded in a ready-to-use form.

The X-Series services will be charged at a flat monthly fee, rather than the more common pay-as-you-go model.

3 says prices will be equivalent to fixed-line broadband – which could be as little as $30 a month.

The service will launch in the UK on December 1, with an Australian service rollout "beginning within the next few months".

This will coincide with the telco's launch of its high-speed HSDPA services.

Telstra was the first to go with HSDPA in Australia, launching its Next G service on October 6.

"We are very excited about the X-Series and what it will mean for our customers in Australia," 3 marketing and product sales director Nigel Dews told the Herald Sun.

"It will bring the best internet brands to 3 and through their 3 mobile will allow customers to have the complete internet experience wherever they are for the first time."

While users of fast 3G mobiles have been able to use the internet for a few years, it's been a "walled garden" allowing limited access.

The X-Series partners Skype, Sling Media, Yahoo!, Nokia, Google, eBay, Microsoft, Orb and Sony Ericsson.

X-Series functions include:

* Make and receive unlimited Skype calls with Skype PC users anywhere in the world, and to any other Skype 3 mobile customer. Skype to Skype calls on a 3 mobile will be free.

* With a Slingbox, you will be able to watch anything you can watch on your own TV, including free-to-air and pay-TV – plus watch shows you have recorded or even queue a recording when away from home.

* Using Orb, you gain on-the-go access to the music, photos and videos on your PC.

* You can text instant messages, to or from Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger, to another X-Series handset, or a PC.

* You can search the internet using Google or Yahoo.

* Plus you can buy and sell in real time on eBay.
